The 2017 Tennis Victoria Pennant season kicked off last weekend with MCC Glen Iris Valley fielding 14 teams. It was a mixed bag of results for our 8 women’s and 6 men’s teams representing the club. Our teams recorded 6 wins in Round 1, singles week, and we look forward the doubles matches starting this coming weekend.
Week to week we will have a team profile and a little more in depth info about their match results for the week.
Grade 1 Men’s Team
The grade 1 men’s team had a comprehensive win over Kooyong Lawn on Saturday, with Chase Ferguson, Michael Shepherd, Chanchai Sookton- Eng and Marlino Pascual all out playing their respective opponents to take all 4 singles matches. Chase was up against Stefan Storch, and fresh off the back of last weeks ITF junior victory took the match 6-1 6-4. Michael had a sold 6-4 6-4 victory over Daniel Nickels while Chanchai showed no mercy defeating Matt Nickels 6-2 6-2. The closest match of the day was at number 4 where Marlino had to come from a set down against Mike Vaughan to win 6-7 6-1 6-3.
Chase, Michael, and Chanchai were all a part of the MCC Glen Iris Valley Premier league team in 2017. This week will see the men’s grade 1 number 1 player, Themi Sitzoukis, play his first match for the club after returning from overseas Pro Tour events. While the team gets Themi back, Chase leaves for Italy today for 4 weeks of tournaments. We wish him all the best!
