What does a ballkid do?
Ballkids play an integral role in ensuring that tennis tournaments run smoothly. Throughout the Australian Open series, each ballkid is a focal part of every game, be it at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne or at the Brisbane International, Hobart International or the Sydney International.

Who can be a ballkid?
Ballkids are aged between 12 and 15 years depending on the tournament age restrictions.

How do I apply?
You can register by completing the form on the link below. By registering for the Ballkid Program you are indicating that you would like to be considered to participate in the Australian Open, Australian Open Series and Pro Tour Events across Australia.

Please note that trials and training sessions for the Australian Open are held in Victoria; applicants will be required to attend events in Victoria if they wish to be considered for the Australian Open. Applications for Australian Open 2019 will be open from 31 July 2017 until 1 March 2018. Applicants must be aged between 12 to 15 years on the 1st of January 2019 in order to be considered eligible for this event.

We must also turn our attention to the upcoming Winter season as teams are due on March the 2nd. If you have not registered for a team as yet, please click on the following link and do so as soon as possible.

The MCC Glen Iris Valley Trivia Night is back.

In years past we have seen a large turn out for the Trivia night and we are happy to announce this year’s event will be on Friday, March the 2nd.

The team from Funky Bunch Trivia will host the night and they are not your average trivia night. No more washed-out trivia hosts and no more uninspiring questions off an A4 piece of paper. Utilising the latest technology and know how we bring you an audio-visual feast that will redefine the way you think of trivia nights, it’s more like a game show!

• Date: Friday, March 2nd
• Time: 7pm for a 7.30pm start
• Location: At the Club
• Bring a plate of food for your table
• No BYO drinks – Bar will be open and stocked
• Raffle with some great prizes
• Tables of 8 to 10
• Cost: $10 per person – payable on the night

Vida Tennis is offering all kids the opportunity to try tennis with us for free. We will be opening up our doors on Sunday the 4th of Feb from 1 pm for any new players who live in the local area to try Hot Shots Tennis with us.

There will be two-time slot options and we will have different level courts running at the same time to ensure every level, and age is catered for.

Option 1

• 1pm to 1.45pm

Option 2

• 1.45pm to 2.30pm

Tennis Victoria’s Pennant competition is the largest interclub representative competition in the country with over 3500 junior and adult players representing 150 clubs. Tennis Victoria Pennant is played during the winter season (April – August) and is played over 14 weeks plus finals. Play begins at 9am on a Saturday morning for Women and at 1pm on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for Men (Sunday afternoon also Women’s teams available).

The format consists of singles and doubles played on alternate weeks, with all rubbers the best of 3 tiebreak sets. The Men’s Masters (age 45+) and Men’s Open Doubles play a best of 3 tiebreak sets, doubles only format every week.

MCC Glen Iris Valley offers a Pennant only membership for those that wish to participate in Pennant for MCC Glen Iris Valley, but don’t need the unrestricted access to the courts all year round. Please see the membership page for more details.
The cost to play pennant for the season is $70 per player and you can register to play via the following form. This fee covers balls, team registration and a club playing Polo shirt.

Key Changes to the 2018 season: As well as the Queen’s birthday weekend, there will be another bye round for all teams. This will take place on Saturday/Sunday 7th & 8th July (middle week of school holidays.)

Season Dates: Start April 21st 2018

Applications Close: Feb 16th 2018

Please note that the club will be closed on Christmas Day.

There will be a number of tournaments and events over the Dec/Jan holiday period at the club. Please check the court booking sheet to ensure there is a court available when you would like to play.

Over the summer months, please ensure you bag and water your courts before and after play. A lack of water on the courts causes the baseline areas to have issues, as well as dust blowing from court to court. Please water from the fence to fence and give the baseline areas a little extra.

The club will be closed at sunset each night over the summer months.

The evening, Wednesday the 17th of Jan, will start with some on-court coaching sessions from 7.00pm to 8.00pm followed by a sausage sizzle. We will have the Australian Open day 3 night match on the TV’s in the club and the bar will be open.

The coaching session is open to club members, night competition players, social tennis players or anyone wanting to give tennis a go. There will be many different levels of coaching courts running at the same time, so you will be able to find your best place.

It is a great opportunity for adults to get into tennis for the first time or get back into the game! If you are new to the club, come and meet the coaching team, other club members and experience tennis with Vida at the MCC Glen Iris Valley Tennis Club.

Following the session enjoy the club’s great facilities and have a BBQ on and grass and watch some of the Australian Open action.

The George Gilmour Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Club Coach of the Year for successful coaching programs and pathways within their community and demonstration of loyalty to his/her club. In 2017, the award was given to Kane and the Vida team for their work in developing coaching and club programs & pathways for tennis at the MCC Glen Iris Valley Tennis Club.

It is an award that is held in high regard in the tennis industry, and I thank all the Vida Team and the MCC Glen Iris Valley tennis club for their hard work and support in promoting tennis at our club.” Kane Dewhurst

The awards night was held at the Royal South Yarra Tennis Club where four awards were given; the Rookie (Under 25) of the Year, Rising Start (Under 30) of the year, Club Coach of the Year and one inductee into the Hall of Fame – Elizabeth Peers.

Due to the extreme weather over last weekend, Tennis Victoria had to make the decision to cancel the final of the Tennis Victoria Premier League competition. Tennis Victoria had been assessing a possible change to the National Tennis Centre Indoor Courts, but unfortunately, access to this venue for the required time to complete our Premier League Finals was not possible.

As a result, as per Premier League Rule 9.1 (e) the teams who finished highest on the ladder after the regular rounds are to be crowned Tennis Victoria Premier League Champions.

In the men’s competition, this was MCC Glen Iris Valley and in the women’s it was Liston TC. The club took home the $6000 prize money after finishing on top of the ladder after a stellar season of Premier League.

It was a great season for our men only dropped two rubbers in the 5 round home and away season. Captain Aaron Addison played every tie and was undefeated for the season. “It was a hollow victory having the final washed out, but one we will take never the less. This is clearly the strongest club competition in Australia and they are not easy to win, so it was very pleasing for the boys to come away with a victory for MCC Glen Iris in 2017.”

Over the next few months, the majority of our men’s team will compete in the December Showdown and the Australian Summer of tournaments. We look forward to watching their progress.

While disappointed with the weather affected end to the competition, Tennis Victoria Competitions Manager Jeff Downes said “It’s a shame that the weather was able to affect the playing of our finals as it’s always a fantastic day on the Tennis Victoria calendar. It is important though that we protect the safety of all involved. It has been a wonderful competition this year with many new players having a chance to experience Tennis Victoria Premier League and we hope to see them back next year.”
